Kenchii Material Levels

Kenchii's got some seriously awesome grooming shears. Their blades not only have a winning combination of alloys , but also a tested-an-true building process that makes for one hell of an edge. Their manufacture utilizes a unique vacuum heat treatment process that fortifies the shears from corrosion and improves upon a durable, immaculate finish.

Level 1

Kenchii says "Level 1 products are great for beginners and everyday stylists. They provide exceptional value for your money without sacrificing quality and performance. This entry level Japanese stainless steel has good hardness, corrosion resistance and is able to keep a great edge. Rockwell: 54--55."

The Scorpion series and Love series are both Level 1 dog shears. In our experience, you can you can get a better shear for the same price.

Level 2

Kenchii says "Level 2 products provide stylists with exceptional quality, performance, and value. This is a high carbon Japanese stainless steel with great corrosion resistance, good strength, and the ability to maintain an excellent edge. Rockwell: 55--57."

The Five Star, Flipper, and T-Series are all Level 2 pet shears. Similar to the Level 1 series shears, we've found you can get a better shear for the same price or less. Any shear with a Rockwell hardness of 57 or below is on the soft side, which means the edge will not keep or cut through thick fur.

Level 3

Kenchii says "Level 3 shears are for professional who demand superior quality and performance from their tools. A premium Japanese stainless steel with an excellent corrosion resistance. Molybdenum and cobalt alloy increases toughness, strength, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance. After heat treatment, this metal is capable of attaining extraordinary hardness and wear resistance. Rockwell: 58--60."

The majority of Kenchii's premium dog grooming shears are Level 3: Bumble Bee, Eric Salas, Evolution, Flame, Jonathan David, Lotus, Mustang, Pink Poodle, Shinobi, and Sue Watson. These are all great shears - especially the Lotus and Flame. If you prefer a coated shear with a beveled edge (AKA "Semi-convex"), the Bumble Bee and Pink Poodle are both pretty impressive.

Level 4

Kenchii says "Level 4 products were created to satisfy the needs of elite stylists and platform artists who demand ultimate performance and design. A truly high-end top of the line metal, mixed with pure base cobalt and vanadium for super strength, durability, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance. Rockwell: 60--62."

Presently, only the Viper series dog shears are ranked as Level 4 which is also their highest level for grooming shears without special custom orders. They're all light-weight, razor sharp convex edges that provide superior show quality scissor finishes.

Level 5!

Kenchii says "Level 5 products are the ultimate in design, luxury and performance. Each piece is custom created and takes about 6-8 weeks to finish. Our proprietary blend of the world's finest metal is combined with the best alloys available in the world today. Tungsten and vanadium is added to produce a fine, yet dense steel grain structure. It just doesn't get any better than this. Rockwell: 60--63."

We're not sure what these special shears are, so if you interested in Kenchii's Level 5 pet shears, you'll need to contact them directly about details. 

FYI: VG10 and Damascus shears are presently known as the world's best and finest steel blades.
